Second Grade Holiday Party

Cookie Buddies

We had such a GREAT time with our kindergarten buddies before Christmas! We invited them down each day before break to do an activity with us in our classroom. On this particular day we made Rudolph cookies out of Nutter butter cookies. My second graders did an awesome job of helping and modeling for the kindergarteners!

The Hour of Code in Room 107

During the Hour of Code the kids were able to learn about the job of "coding" in the technology world. It is safe to say that most kids really ended up liking this app!

Jar Wars

Starting December 8 and going through the 12th children are encouraged to participate in Wayne Center's Jar Wars.

Students can bring in change/money to donate to a teacher's jar during that time frame. All money donated will be used in supplying a family with Christmas presents this year.

The three teachers who have the most money in their jars will end up with a pie in the face on December 19th :)

Experiment: Trapping Gas

The kids did an experiment to better understand gas. They trapped some gas by blowing bubbles into a cup of soapy water. When they popped the bubbles they were releasing the gas back into the air. They really enjoyed this activity!

Fancy Nancy's Favorite Fancy Words is a great book for studying interesting words. When we are reading books, articles, or stories we should always be on the look out for interesting words! Ask your child about some of the interesting words that they have been reading about.

Second Grade Skills Week 13

Spelling: We are working on the vowel patterns that create the long E sound in words. (e, ee, ea, y)

Comprehension Skill: We will be looking into author's purpose. There are three main reasons that an author writes a book. These three reasons are to persuade, inform, or to entertain. We look at these three ways with the acronym P.I.E. Every book that we read can fall into one of these three categories for author's purpose.

Comprehension Strategy: While reading our books, magazines, and articles we should be questioning what we read. When we ask questions it helps us understand what we are reading. As your child is reading at night encourage them to ask questions about the book/article as they are reading.

Vocabulary: We have a working understanding of synonyms but will be moving onto antonyms. An antonym is an opposite word. Hot/cold, big/little, dry/wet, teacher/student

Idioms: We started idioms today and the kids think these are fun! What is an idiom? I would encourage that you ask your child that question. I have encouraged them to try to use the idioms that they are learning in class at home!

If you have any questions or concerns please contact me!

Solid, Liquid, Gas Molecules

Today with Mrs. Munk the kids learned that solid molecules take on a specific shape. Here are many kids in class, making a sold molecule. There is no more room for anyone else and the shape is made!

Alexis, Reece, Aiden, Lucas, and Talia made a water molecule. They had room to move and could spread out. A liquid doesn't have a shape. It takes the shape of whatever container it is put inside.

Alexis was then left to be the gas molecule. She had room to move about freely and didn't have a shape. Below is a video of her being a gas molecule!

Way to go Alexis! I don't think that I can do that anymore!

Quotation Marks to show Conversations

Dylan did such a great job at using quotation marks to show a conversation was happening! This was our first time doing this activity! I was so impressed with all of them!

Natalie S. has learned that if she makes the print bigger then the character is also talking louder because they are getting excited!

Rae explored some different coloring so that her characters each had a different look about them as they were talking!

Reece had so much to say that I think her character conversation could have kept going! Nice job Reece!

They used the PicWall app to do this assignment!

Monday, October 20, 2014

Today the kids used an app called PicWall. They were able to take their picture and then add sentences to go along with the picture. The assignment was titled, About Me. We then took a look at how to change the color of the text and change our fonts! That is always a fun thing to learn! Thanks Natalie for agreeing to share yours with us today!

Word Mover

Word Mover is an app that the kids learned last week. They are able to type their spelling words into the app and then move them around on the page. The kids are then asked to move their words into categories. Kian choose to place his words into categories by syllables.

Week 10 in Second Grade

Spelling this week will consist of plurals. Your second grader will be given the singular version of a word. They will then be asked to make the word plural and spell it correctly.

Comprehension Skill: We are again working on Cause and Effect. It is a concept that most have started to grasp. We will be working on finding cause and effect in the books that they are reading.

Language Vocabulary: As a class we will be introducing several common homophones. Homophones can be very tricky for second graders to begin with but with practice they will get easier. The hardest one for most second graders is their, there, and they're.

We will be working on expression as our fluency skill. What does expression look like? How can we change our expression? Why is using expression important?

Writing Style: We will be working on an expository/ informational piece of writing. We will be using our i-pads to do some research about different animals that could be kept as pets.

Remember if you have any questions, concerns, or need anything please let me know! Have a great week, I know we will!

Rocket Station

This station was the class favorite.  How exciting to see the Science behind rockets and explotions.

Chemistry Magic was another neat way to see Science in action!

Science Magic

In Science it is very important to wear safety goggles
They LOVED LOVED LOVED the Science stations!!!!!

Using dry ice and magic bubbles to make ghosts! What a neat experiment for the kids to see and for some to be able to actually be able to participate in!

Nathan was able to go up and get a "ghost" and let him go free!

We were also able to see them put a dollar in the magic solution "water" and then have them light it on fire. The money was protected and did not go up in flames. How very cool!!!!
